Y. David Scharf Supports Arsht Center’s “I am Me” Production
Y. David Scharf and his wife, Cheryl, proud supporters of the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, are happy to announce that an original production that tackles teens’ mental health and wellness began its tour of Miami-Dade County public high schools on January 31, 2021. The mixed-media theatrical work, I am Me, along with afterschool self-expression workshops and supplementary materials, will be provided by the Arsht Center at no cost to every 9th grade student and teacher in Miami-Dade County.
I am Me was created in response to a rise in depression and anxiety among today’s teenagers, with the goal of introducing the arts as a tool for coping, self-expression, and healing. In the production, six young people share what it’s like to be teenagers in 21st century Miami – anxious about climate change, parental expectations, and societal pressures, but ultimately finding hope and comfort in one another, in art, and within themselves.
“Cheryl and I believe that the arts can provide an important outlet for today’s adolescents, who are grappling with so many challenges to their mental health and well-being,” said Scharf. “We are proud to play a small role in supporting I am Me, the first arts-driven mental health initiative of its kind.”
