Randi Mason Featured in Law.com Q&A on How Morrison Cohen is Built to Thrive in All Economic Climates

Randi Mason, co-chair of Morrison Cohen’s Corporate Department, was featured in a Law.com article entitled “‘Leaner Options, Lower Costs’: Why Morrison Cohen's Corporate Leader Isn't Sweating a Slowdown.” In the August 25, 2022 Q&A, Randi discussed how as a midsize firm, Morrison Cohen is inherently well-prepared to weather an economic slowdown, due to its flexible DNA, lean staff of nimble, well-rounded attorneys, and ability to offer broad legal coverage with lower costs.

In the article, Randi explained that Morrison Cohen is able to consistently attract and retain talent because “we offer the benefits of Big Law and a better lifestyle.” She said, “Part of what drives our ability to hire is that what you get at our firm is a competitive compensation package, but also intangibles. You get better relationships with partners. You get opportunities to do different kinds of work.”

Because of associates’ hands-on involvement in a variety of sophisticated transactions, Randi said, “Specialization happens naturally over time. If somebody is interested in exploring a practice area, we are more than happy to provide that opportunity… You’re not siloed into a narrow practice area early on in your career.”

Randi also discussed the value of training well-rounded attorneys: “Being thoughtful, creative, and flexible thinkers and doers is really important. It doesn’t serve anyone if attorneys only see through a straw, because business problems aren’t one-dimensional.”

Randi explained that Morrison Cohen’s structure enables the firm to pass value along to their clients. “We operate leanly and manage our overhead leanly,” she said. “Those things together mean we’re able to offer more competitive billing rates… Clients who may be reluctant to try out a new firm during a bull market are [now] more focused on and aware of their own budgets and willing to try out a new firm with an excellent reputation and attorneys that are well-trained at a lower price point.”

Randi summed up what sets Morrison Cohen apart, “We can cover so many practice areas, our clients don’t lose out on the broad legal coverage. The aspect of being flexible is in our DNA, and it enables us to give our clients the full scope of legal coverage with leaner options and lower costs.”
