Jason Gottlieb Contributes to International Journal of Blockchain Law, Volume III

Jason Gottlieb, Partner in Morrison Cohen’s Business Litigation Department and Chair of the White Collar and Regulatory Enforcement Group and Digital Assets Group, participated in a virtual discussion, which was featured in the July 2022 edition of the International Journal of Blockchain Law (IJBL), Volume III, published by The Global Blockchain Business Council (GBBC).

Jason’s conversation, entitled “A Round Table Discussion on Stablecoins: Taking the World by Storm Or Storming the World?,” featured 10 panelists, including David Adlerstein, Counsel at Wachtell, Lipton; Collins Belton, Managing Partner at Brookwood P.C.; and Lee Schneider, General Counsel at Ava Labs. The thought leaders offered insights about the current state of the digital asset space and how stablecoins will evolve in the near and long term.

Discussing whether central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) could be a viable alternative to fully backed currency, Jason said, “A CBDC would give the government unparalleled control and surveillance over the lifeblood of our society… It’s pretty disastrous for financial privacy, and in my opinion, the reason most of the technical community hates the idea. So frankly, I am pessimistic about the future of CBDCs.”

The group also discussed whether stablecoins present unique challenges for anti-money laundering (AML) and financial crime surveillance. Jason said, “Interestingly, I think stablecoins make life easier for AML and financial crime surveillance... The dirty little not-so-secret secret of AML and crypto is that many law enforcement officials (FBI, FinCEN, DOJ prosecutors, etc.) love crypto because it’s more easily traceable than cash or other laundering techniques.”
