Steven Cooperman Featured in Law.com Q&A Series

Morrison Cohen Chair and Co-Managing Partner Steven Cooperman was featured in the May 11, 2022 Law.com Q&A series, “How I Made It,” in which he discussed his 20-year career at Morrison Cohen and his path from associate to his current leadership role at the firm.

In the Q&A, Steve talked about the challenges of being elected to firm leadership in 2020, just before the onset of the pandemic. He said, “[We] were immediately thrust into ‘break glass’ mode. The silver lining of that experience was that we quickly coalesced as a management team, and we learned a lot about the resilience and character of our firm.”

Asked how the firm decided to elevate him to his current position, he replied, “I think it is the culmination of [our] shared history as well as relationships that bred a mutual trust and a belief by my partners that I had the character and temperament to lead the firm. I am thankful for that trust and the opportunity!”

Steve advised attorneys who want to rise to firm leadership to find ways to contribute. “Start small and build from there!” he said. Steve also discussed the influences on his career, crediting Bill Rubenstein, a mentor from his early years at Skadden; David Scherl, Morrison Cohen’s former chair and managing partner; and his father, who worked 14-hour days to support his family and also managed to be a constant presence in his life.

In discussing a list of new and exciting firm initiatives that he and fellow Chair and Co-Managing Partner Y. David Scharf are working on, Steve said, “With all that is going on, plus the regular day-to-day business, it can become easy to lose momentum and get sidetracked. You need persistence and passion to drive these projects home.”
