Jessica Lipson and Randi Mason Discuss Potential for Generative AI to Transform Mid-Size Firms’ Work Product
Partners Jessica Lipson and Randi Mason were among several law firm leaders interviewed in a Law.com Pro Mid-Market article that discussed how midsize firms are exploring generative AI and learning how to use the technology to improve business functions and eventually, client work.
In the article, entitled “’Cautious But Optimistic’: After Slow Adoption, Midsize Firms See Vast Potential for Gen AI,” Jessica, co-chair of Morrison Cohen’s Technology, Data and IP Practice, said that when it comes to using AI for actual work product presented to clients, AI is not ready for prime time, but the firm’s approach has been “cautious but optimistic.” She said, “We are looking at new tools, and are optimistic those tools will be helpful to us. It will certainly help us manage our business internally, and some client work, but none of the solutions are ready for real legal services use.”
Randi Mason, co-chair of the Corporate Practice, predicted that eventually AI “will be as transformative as email and the internet.” She said, “It will accelerate the pace of transactional law.” For now, the firm is having staff and attorneys work with products like Bard and Chat GPT to familiarize themselves with AI products in general, but they are “not encouraging the use of open source AI tools” when it comes to work product.
“This will be slow-moving, but it is a very exciting time for those who are watching it. A real way to improve how they work with their clients,” Randi said.
