New York State Follows IRS Guidance in Extending State Tax Filing and Tax Payment Deadlines

Following similar IRS guidance in which the IRS extended the federal income tax filing deadline and federal income tax payment due date, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance recently released Notice N-20-2 extending both the state income tax filing deadline and state income tax payment due date.  These extensions automatically apply to all individuals, fiduciaries (including estates and trusts), and corporations with a state income tax return and/or a state income tax payment due on April 15, 2020, and such taxpayers do not need to file any additional forms to receive such extensions.  For taxpayers who owe state income taxes, there is no limit on the amount that may be postponed from April 15, 2020 to July 15, 2020, and no interest or penalties will be assessed or accrued during such extension.
