CLIENT ALERT: New York City Passes Law that, with Certain Exceptions, Prohibits Employers from Requesting or Using an Applicant’s or Employee’s Credit History in Employment Decisions

May 12, 2015 - Recently, Mayor Bill de Blasio signed a bill (0261-2014) that amends the New York City Human Rights Law, making it an unlawful discriminatory practice for an employer to use an individual's consumer credit history in making employment decisions. The bill goes into effect on September 3, 2015. New York City employers should immediately review and update their hiring and employment policies to ensure full compliance with this new law.
